Generation of computer

The latest computer works on 5th generation technology. Today latest generation technology works on artificial intelligence systems.so we can say there are five computer generations. Initially the generation term was used to distinguish the difference in the latest technologies at that time invented on the basis of hardware and software.

What is computer ?

Computer is an electronic device or machine which is used for technical and educational purpose. Computer has the ability to process the data and store them into memory.

Computer works on many functions such as playing games create documents, email sending, and other educational as well as technical purposes.

How many computer generations are there till now

There are totally 5 generations till now.

  1. First generation of computer—1946 – 1959
  2. Second generation of computer—1959 – 1965
  3. Third generation of computer—1965 – 1971
  4. Fourth generation of computer—1917 – 1780
  5. Fifth generation of computer—1980 –  Till  Now

Here we briefly discuss of the generations of computer=>

First generation of computer:-

  1. The period of the first-generation start from 1946 – 1959.
  2.  The first generation computers are used” vacuum tubes “.
  3.  First-generation of computers used “ batch processing operating system “.
  4.  “ Punch cards, magnetic tape, paper tap “ are used as an input or output in this generation of computer.”
  5. Machine code is used as a programming language in this generation of computer.
  6. J.P  and J.W Mauchly invented the first generation of computer.

 First generation computer name :-

1) ENIAC

  2) EDVAC

   3) IBM- 701

    4) UNIVAC

   5) IBM-650

Advantages of first generation of computers:

In this generations of computer have not any proper advantage but these are full of disadvantages

Disadvantages of first generation of computers:

  1. These computers are based on vacuum tubes.
  2. First-generation of computer size is too big.
  3. These are very costly.
  4. The efficiency of first generation of computers was very low.
  5. Limited programming capability in this generation of computers.
  6. Large amount of heat produced at that time they work.
  7. Not reliable.
  8. First-generation of computer support machine language only.
  9. These computers are not human friendly.
  10. Consumed a lot of electricity.

Second generation of computer:

  1. The period of the second generation computer was starting from 1959 – 1965.
  2. In second generation of computers “ Vacuumed tubes were replaced with transistors “.
  3. Transistors are consuming very less power.
  4. Transistors are very cheap as compare to the vacuum tubes.
  5. In second generation of computers “Magnetic disk was used as a secondary memory. “
  6. In second generation of computers “Magnetic core was used as primary memory.”
  7. In second generation of computers” Assembly language takes the place of machine language “i.e. FORTRAN, COBOL.
  8.  Second generation of computers supports” Batch processing and multiprogramming operating systems.”

Name of second generation of computers:

  1. UNIVAC 1108
  2. IBM 7094
  3. CDC3600
  4. CDC 1604

Advantages of second generation of computers:

  1. Size was very small as compared to the first generation of computers.
  2. Second generation computer’s size decreases due to replace the vacuum tubes with transistors.
  3. Second generation of computers produces less amount of heat as compare to the first generation of computers.
  4. Less energy was used when they work.
  5. Low cost as compared to the first generation of computers.
  6. Better portability as compared to its previous version.
  7. Second generation of computers supports two types of languages i.e. machine & assembly languages.

Disadvantages of second generation of computers:

  1. Second generations computer was only used for a specific purpose.
  2. The cooling system must be required for second generation of computer systems.
  3. The maintenance cost was very high of second generation of computers.
  4. Produced big amount of heat.
  5. Second generation of computers binds into many limitations.

Third generation of computer:

  1. The period of third generation of computers was started 1965 – 1971.
  2. In the third generation of computer transistors were replaced with the integrated circuits (ICs).
  3. In the third generation of computers One IC chip was contains thousands of transistors.
  4. In third generation of computer  One “  IC chip  “ uses many transistors capacitors and several registers and after combine all elements made an associated circuitry.
  5. The third generation of computers is very small in size as compared to these previous versions.
  6. This generation is of computers very cheap, reliable and efficient as compare the second generation of computers.
  7. IC chip was invented by Jack Kilby.
  8. Third generation computer supports multiple functions at the same time i.e time-sharing remote processing etc.
  9. The high-level language was used in the third generation of computers.
  10. In the third generation of computer ” multiprogramming “operating systems are using.
  11. The third generation of computer supports FORTRAN 2ND, COBOL, ALGOL-68, BASIC ETC.

Name of third generation of computer:

  1. IBM 360
  2. PDP-11
  3. ICL 2900
  4. IBM 370
  5. PDP-8

Advantages of third generation of computers:

  1. Third generation computers were cheaper as compared to the second generation of computers.
  2. Size of the third generation of computers decreases very much as compared to the first or second generation of computers.
  3. Storage capacity increases as compare to the second generation of computers.
  4. The integrated chip provides a very small size of the third generation of computers.
  5. Mouse and keyboard are used as input devices but in first and second-generation punch cards are used for given any input into the computer system.
  6. Third generation computer-supported time-sharing and multiprogramming.
  7. The operating system is much better as compared to the last generation of the computer.
  8. Response time is too decreases microseconds to the nanoseconds.
  9. Third generation computer works very fastly as compared to the first and second generation of computer.
  10. Efficiency is very high in the third generation of computers.

Disadvantages of third generation of computer:

  1. Air condition is required.
  2. Manufacturing cost increases rapidly.
  3. Maintenance cost very high.
  4. Integrated chips are very difficult to maintain.
  5. Very high technology is used to manufacturing the IC chips.
  6. Third generation computer bounded into a specific limit.

Fourth generation of computer:

  1. The period of fourth-generation started 1971- 1980.
  2.  In the Fourth generation of computer Integrated chips replaced with  ( VLSI ) very large scale integrated circuits.
  3. In Fourth generation of computer One VLSI is created after combining of 5000 transistors.
  4. The Fourth generation of computer is very powerful and reliable.
  5.  Fourth generation of computers using time-sharing and standard operating systems.
  6. Fourth generation of computers also known as a personal computer ( PC ).
  7. The fourth generation of computer support distributed operating system.
  8. The fourth generation of computers also supports multiprogramming.
  9. The following languages are used in the Fourth generation of computer C, C++  etc.
  10. GUI graphical user interface technology is also used in the Fourth generation of computers.

  2. CRAY-X-MP (SUPER COMPUTER)
  3. DEC 10
  4. IBM 4341
  5. CRAY-1 (SUPER COMPUTER)
  6. STAR 1000

Advantages of Fourth generation of computer:

  1. The fourth generation of computers is very fast in computation.
  2. Heat production is negligible in the Fourth generation of computers.
  3. Maintenance is very less in the fourth generation of computers.
  4. Small in size.
  5. Work very efficiently.
  6. All types of programming languages are used in this generation of computers.
  7. Advanced technology is used.
  8. Used for multipurpose.
  9. In the Fourth generation of computer multiprogramming, time-sharing used.
  10. This generation provides a lot of space in memory.
  11. Fast memory is using.

Disadvantages of Fourth generation of computer:

  1. Fourth generation of computer design and manufacturing is very compact.
  2. If you using a high processing computer then you have need air condition.

Fifth generation of computer:

  1. The period of Fifth generation of computers start from 1980 –Till Now.
  2. VLSI technology is used in Fifth generation of computers.
  3. Artificial intelligence is working in the latest type of computers.
  4. Fifth-generation of computers thinks like a human.
  5. Fifth-generation of computers are used in technology, education and many other departments.
  6. It supports all types of languages i.e. C++, C, PHP, JAVA, PYTHON etc.

which products are Artificial intelligencey technology

Advantages of Fifth generation of computer:

  1. Fifth generation of computers works very fast.
  2. It available in different sizes according to need.
  3. Fifth-generation of computer are more user friendly.
  4. Human are fully understand with this Fifth generation of computers.
  5. All types of multimedia are supported in the Fifth generation of computer.

Disadvantages of Fifth generation of computer:

  1. For batter working in Fifth generation of computer they always need low level language.
  2. Due to pass some harmful waves it spoiled the human brain and mind.
